Choosing Wedding Dresses
One of the most stressful decisions that brides ever make is choosing their wedding dresses, even though they may only wear them once! Here are some ideas to help to make the choice easier. This isn't about which styles suit your bodyshape or which colours flatter your hair or skin tone. This is about how to shop.
Decide how much you can spend and only try on dresses that fall within your price range. That way you are less tempted to choose a dress that will leave you in debt. Are your tastes more expensive than your budget? Think about hiring or choosing from a pre-loved selection of dresses. Look out for bargains available at the sales. If you are going abroad on holiday or on a booze cruise, you may find buying your wedding dress more cost-effective there. Don't be too concerned about current trends. There are very few shops that will sell you something dated - unless you are going for a vintage look, of course - and the most important thing is to find a dress that suits you. Allow plenty of time to shop around and try on lots of styles. You may be surprised at what suits you. When my daughter was choosing her wedding dress a couple of years ago she was one of the lucky ones who looked good in just about everything she tried on, but the dresses that made me feel tearful were the narrow fitted ones. Which brings me to another point - always shop for your wedding dress with a friend who can be relied on to tell you truthfully what does and doesn't suit you. Your mother may not be the best person to do this, but do let her see what you have chosen.
Be prepared to take advice from the professionals. They want you to look good because it reflects well on their shop and you'll recommend them on to other potential brides.
Comfort: make sure that you can sit down comfortably in your dress and consider the season. Goose pimples aren't a good look for a bride so make sure that there is something warm to wear over the dress if you might need it, especially for a winter wedding.
You'll probably be choosing your dress several months before your wedding. Try not to let the stress of all the preparations cause you to overeat, but also don't go on a crash diet just before the day. Your dress can be altered to fit your new shape, but only within reasonable limits!
And, most importantly, once you've ordered your dress STOP SHOPPING. Even if you start to wonder if you've made the right choice, come your wedding day you are going to look gorgeous!
