Money Saving Tips for your Wedding

The average cost of a British wedding is running close to £20,000. Here are some money saving tips to show that it is perfectly possible to arrange your wedding for a fraction of that price without compromising its quality.

1. The major item affecting the cost of your wedding is the length of the guest list. The cost of venues and catering is directly affected by the number of people who will be attending your wedding. Be thrifty by inviting only family and close friends for the main celebration. If it's important to you to have a big party invite the others for evening celebrations.

2. Be flexible about the date of your wedding. A summer wedding is lovely, although even in summer you can't guarantee sunshine in Britain! But the peak wedding season is between Easter and the end of September. Venues are likely to be less expensive if you marry outside this period. Or, if it's at all possible, get married on a weekday or Sunday rather than a Saturday.

3. Always work out your budget before you do anything else. It's easier to stick to it if you contact shops and suppliers and ask them what they can provide you for the amount you have decided rather than set your heart on something that will blow your budget. If you aren't sure about budgeting, invest in a couple of hours time from a wedding planner to help you work it out.

4. Get married in the afternoon so that your guests will have eaten before they come to the wedding. Then have your wedding breakfast in the early evening so you won't need an evening buffet.

5. Arrange to have your wedding cake served as the dessert at your wedding breakfast or have a cheese wedding cake which is cut up and served with fresh bread and salad if you are having an evening buffet.

6. Halve the cost of your wedding cake by buying celebration cakes from your local supermarket or get a family member to make it. Then decorating it yourself. There are plenty of websites which sell cake decorations, such as sugar flowers, ready for use.

7. Set up an ipod or cd player at your reception and ask a friend or a family member to organise the music.

8. Balloons can look very classy and are a more cost-effective option for venue decoration than flowers.

9. Hiring your wedding dress could halve its cost. If this doesn’t appeal consider buying a pre-owned dress from a charity shop or specialist retailer. You may find bargains abroad if you are going on holiday or a booze-cruise.

10. Hire a wedding planner like Make Our Day Events and use their negotiating expertise, market knowledge and money saving tips to help you stick to your budget.

What our clients say

"Just wanted to write to say a big thank-you for everything you (and Rena) did to make our wedding day run smoothly. Your consultation and thoroughness gave me, and in turn Jordi, peace of mind both before and on the day itself. With your help everything came together beautifully, you even identified some discrepencies B4 the day so we could smooth out and align expectations. Thanks again Jenny and Rena."

"You were such a great reassurance (especially to the bride)! We really appreciated that you were not only so highly efficient, but also extremely understanding of the pressures we were under."

"to have someone calm and organised like Jenny ... was an absolute god-send"
