Really looking forward to finding out from local real life entrepreneur Elton Boocock how small changes on my website can have a big impact on my company. Dec 21, Wycombe Advertising Video for Enterprise (WAVE) competition

Just putting together final plans for launching the WAVE competition. This is a schools video competition and is a joint venture between the schools liaison department of Buckinghamshire New University and the Federation of Small Businesses.

The plan is for small teams from local schools to spend a day in local businesses to make a one-minute video about a day in the life in the real world of work.

Immediately after Christmas we'll be looking for prize sponsors and for companies to take part. Bucks New University will be approaching our local schools.

We're really excited about this competition and hoping that it will become an annual event.

Wrong! Time to think about the next event. Send out information about the next event while this one is fresh in your visitors' memories. If you are really on the ball you'll have been running a special offer at your event for bookings for next time.

Follow up all the leads you gathered at your event, and then decide if you can afford to relax.

Too busy to give time to the next event? Well, consider outsourcing the arrangements to someone who is good at pulling the strings and making it all come together. Be wise before your event.

Your event is over, the venue has been cleared and cleaned and you are sitting down for a well-earned rest? How do you know it is well-earned?

Go back to the objectives for your event and check that they were achieved. Did you get the number of visitors you expected? Have you generated leads to follow up? How many?

Then look at the arrangements that you made and ask yourself if everything was ready on time or whether you had a last minute panic about some aspect of your event. This is where you review your plan and the adjustments that you needed to make to it. Look at it with the benefit of hindsight (a wonderful thing!)and ask yourselves which ones you could have avoided. How will you do better next time?

Now the big question: did you run your event within the budget that you set yourself at the start? We've all read in the newspapers about the major projects that overrun their estimated budget by millions of pounds. Is the issue that the initial estimates were too low? Would you have undertaken the event if you'd known at the start what it would actually cost you?

Did the results justify the total outlay?

What are the lessons for next time?

Actually the first question isn't "what's the remedy", it's "do you need to take remedial action?"

You've built your plan, your project is running and you're carrying out regular project reviews. So, is your project running to plan? If the answer is yes, don't change anything - just make sure you have the next review scheduled. You don't need to take remedial action - if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

If the answer is no, then you need to do something. Is the problem covered by your contingency plan? Then switch to it - you've already worked out the answer.

Not covered by the contingency plan? Then take enough time to consider your response and come up with a remedy. In the extreme case you may need to cancel the project but don't do this until it's clear that it's unavoidable.

Sometimes you need to think on your feet to respond to an emergency. I have fond memories of one of our weddings. The wedding was in Oxfordshire, the bride and groom were from South London and had persuaded their local Indian restaurant to cater for the wedding breakfast. Then at the end of the evening the left-over food would be put into foil trays for guests to take home with them.

Everything was going well until the chef whispered to me that he'd forgotten to bring the foil trays. Which is why I was to be found on the streets of Woodstock on a summer Saturday evening, accosting passers-by and asking for directions to the nearest take-away restaurant. Where I begged for foil trays. The restaurant responded magnificently and the bride and groom didn't know until later that there had been a crisis.
