Hywel and Rena's wedding in Rhodes

Thank you to Rena and Hywel for agreeing to let us use these picture of their wedding in Rhodes.

Hywel and Rena had a May wedding on the beautiful island of Rhodes. They flew out there from England with their son and daughter two weeks before the wedding, to comply with the residence requirements for a Greek wedding, and their guests joined them a few days later.

Their wedding was a Greek civil ceremony in a marquee by the poolside at their hotel and was conducted by the mayor. They had to go into the city of Rhodes on the following Monday to register their marriage at the mayor's office.

We wish them every happiness for their future together.

This was a happy family occasion. Both sets of parents flew out to Rhodes to share in it. Rena's father walked her to the ceremony through the hotel and out along the poolside to the applause of the other hotel guests.

Rena and Hywel's children each played an important part in the ceremony. 8 year old Rhys was the ring-bearer and 2 year old Cerys was the flower girl.

The ceremony took place in a gazebo which was decorated for the wedding.

The ceremony was brief. After the mayor had confirmed that he was authorised to conduct the ceremony, Rena and Hywel each confirmed that they were free to marry and then made their vows. It was a very short time before the groom was invited to kiss the bride!

Following the ceremony, Rena and Hywel took part in some Greek traditions to ensure their marriage will be a long and happy one. They were given champagne in glasses tied together by a white ribbon to toast each other. The cake was cut immediately after this and the bride and groom fed each other with the first slices.

The wedding breakfast was held on the terrace outside the hotel restaurant as the sun set.

After returning to England, Rena and Hywel held a reception for all their family and friends who had not been able to join them in Rhodes. They took over a country pub for an evening and had a buffet meal.

Rena is half Italian, so instead of showering the couple with confetti, the guests wound paper streamers around her and Hywel during their first dance.

Rhys, Rena and Hywel's son, surprised them with a wedding cake he had decorated himself using ribbon and brooches and smiley faces made out of edible diamonds. He also baked the top tier of the cake.
