Eco-friendly weddings and parties
In 2010 Make Our Day Events helped to organise the first of our eco-friendly weddings. We learned that it is perfectly possible to celebrate your wedding in style while minimising the impact on the planet.
So however green you wish your celebration to be, here are some tips to help you on your way.
Catering
Check that your venue or your caterer uses locally-sourced and seasonal or fair trade products, and choose your menu with this in mind.
Consider drinking organic wine and buy your beer from a local brewery.
Check whether your caterer separates and recycles waste.
Avoid disposable tableware which will end up in a landfill site.
Our eco-friendly clients organised a recycling party on the day after their wedding, to sort out recyclable waste such as glass bottles, and take them to the local recycling centres.
Transport
The carbon footprint for deliveries can add up so decide on an acceptable distance and choose your service suppliers from within it. Our clients decided to settle for a slightly less eco-friendly type of mobile toilet because the greenest kind was only available from a company 200 miles away. For truly eco-friendly weddings, the ideal choice of wedding and reception venue would be within walking distance of home since the greenest form of transport is on foot. This is not often a practical choice, so consider eco-friendly methods of reaching your destinations - maybe horse and carriage or a vehicle with an electric engine which produces only water as a waste product.
Flowers and decorations
Look for locally sourced and seasonal or fair trade flowers for bouquets and buttonholes. Your florist will advise you which ones are suitable.
Carefully chosen pot plants in attractive containers make lovely table decorations. Our clients grew their own lavender and marguerites but you can buy the plants from garden centres and florists. The plants can be given away to guests at the wedding or you can plant them out in your own garden or hanging baskets.
Give your guests eco-friendly favours, such as a packet of seeds or organic chocolates.
What our clients said
"I want to thank you for all your work before and during the wedding. It was a great help to us and Tom has mentioned how much you helped in the smooth running of the occasion itself ... Charlotte and Tom are now on their honeymoon but I am sure that they would join us in sending you our very best wishes."
